The Seonaidh is a water spirit originating in the Isle of Lewis, according to Scottish explorer Martin Martin. Inhabitants of Lewis would offer Seonaidh ale during a waist-high watery ritual in return for a good harvest of seaweed, or ‘seaware’, to be used as fertiliser for crops. Though this ritual was reportedly suppressed by the Church in 1671, it likely continues in varying forms today, between the cracks of orthodoxy and intertidal time.
